I recently ordered a new Determinator and was wondering if anyone here could give a nay or yay on it, cost is $5000.00 one of the reasons is because of the amount of software for Asain and European, probably week on Euro as most if not all are. I also am a firm believer in not having an all in one scanner like the Modis, Another reason is I dont trust Snap On, I have heard that they come up with lousy updates just to sell the software, As I trust my Matco dealer as we quite honest about the scanner and its good points and weak points, but I do know a few who own the Determinator and speak highly of it.

Any comments?

With all the current updates it's a good tool. Just make sure you are getting the newest version of the tool itself and be sure it includes 'System 2.0' with the 512mb Compact Flash Memory. This update is critical for the Genesys/Determinator scan tool, without it they are so (censored) slow you want to throw it across the shop. It should also have all '05 Domestic/Asian/European/ABS-Airbag software updates for that price.

From my understanding there are three hardware versions of the scanner itself, the first being slow as hell, even with System 2.0, the second and third versions were also slow but System 2.0 speeds them up to make them workable, even for the impatient user like myself. The good news is that you probably won't find any first generation Determinators on the truck today, the second and third versions have been around for a while now.

I've seen them advertised online and in tool pamphlets for a lot less $$, but I have to believe they are selling the much slower first generation scanners at those prices. Definitely not worth it if that' the case. I have the second version and before I got it all sorted out with System 2.0 and routine updates (online) I wasn't very impressed. Compared to the old Masteretch I have they are slow, but more capable. Over time I've grown to rely on this tool and now I kind of like it. There are some issues besides speed, I was getting frequent lock-up but that seems to be rare now, still unacceptable IMO, but it's important to keep updating the tool online (which is free) and it also helps keep the lock-up issues down to a minimum.

Good luck Aurora and if you have any more questions about the tool feel free to ask.

I just updated our Determinator before I retired...Good tool.
I like all of the accessories, and I'm sure the Euro coverage is above average, I know the Jap stuff is.

My boss couldn't figure out how to do the update, but when I did it, it was pretty simple.

Yeah, it was locking up a little before I did the update. But that was mainly the truck shop guys punching buttons repeatedly when nothing happened right away. Get the scan tool away from them, and it performs perfectly.

I feel better on making the descision now based on your input's, I am pretty sure this is the newest version available 2.0 I was told with the fast boot, I am also going to invest in the Oscilloscope but not the add on one, this is a stand alone scope that the Matco dealer spoke very highly of.

Thanks very much for all the input, it put my mind at ease :)

get a pico if you have a laptop, otherwise get a standalone scope such as a vetronix unit or such.

the scope module for the mentor is useable, but very shitty by my standards. the same cost of the module you can get a nice setup from Pico for a laptop.

make sure you send in the card and get the additional keys and cable, you will wind up needing more of the keys as time progresses if you work on more than one line of cars.

Next time don't you think it would be wiser to ask before shelling out $5K?

Sounds like you made a good choice, tho.

I pretty much had input locally from a few who owned one, but always looking for more input on others exsperiences. it is alot of money but with all the software and the capabilties it seemed a better choice then whats out there, and I will get very good support from my dealer no question there.

I saw the Vetronics and really liked it, our local bosch rep demo'd it about a month ago, I am not %100 sold on lap top type scopes as of yet, we do have a vadis system at our shop that runs off a laptop wich seems to work nicely.

i have a 5200 on the wishlist, its the second thing on the shop equipment list to purchase when possible.

i particuarly like the quick scope feature, uses an inductive pickup near the plug, wire, coil, etc. that will do a rather nice pattern to do a quick diag.

Well I recieved a call from my Matco dealer and he explained to me that Matco is doing a promo on the Determinator wich I had already ordered about a week ago but since cancelled because of this deal, they are giving me 3 coupons on free software upgrades on all 3 Pathfinders, ASAIN,DOMESTIC AND EURO, these are all the newest releases, saves me about a $1,000 on software plus I will be getting a new OTC 2 channel Oscilloscope for $500.00.

I know the 4 channels are more usefull for testing 4 signals at once but I was looking at an additinal $2,500
for one so 2 channels is better then none :)

I think I owe him a dinner!

I had searched Ebay for a scanner but have always been leary about buying used scanner equipment, plus the warranty issues, I know the Modis is a non transferable warranty but cant say about the Determinator. if you dont have 2.0 on your scanner I have been told that it is terribly slow so you may want to look into theat after you recieve it.

Good luck!

Looks like a good deal :) OTC makes them for Matco, they call it the
works, am looking forward to getting mine, also I would discourage buying the add on scope as they are not very good, go stand alone if you dont already own one.

I have Mac's Version the "Mentor" I traded and older version of the determinator for it so I am into it for just over 3k for the dom/asian/euro/abs/airbag setup.

Been a great tool. It has made me alot of $$$ due to the shop not having a tool for non-fords (I sub-let it to the shop $25 a pop) I have found it has some functions and pids for fords that even the IDS and WDS does not have.

the dollar amount of the updates beat the hell out of snap on to boot. all scan tools have their trade offs but the Genisys/Mentor/Determinator is a good tool.

Greg, that is a really nice setup and a great deal. I'm in it for ~$5K and still don't have everything listed there.
Good luck, I think you'll find it a valuable asset to your shop.

ETA: they are all kind of slow anyway, but are still a very good diagnostic tool.

"Wow" made me fell better already, Thanks Dominick it just about 8 months ago you was pretty pissed off with your OTC,
because it was slow but reading your latest post, you up graded and now your happy with your OTC.
I wasn't to sure as i have always been a snap-on man for the last 20 odd years.
Just have to find someone to buy my old MT2500 (Red snappy) which has been a good working buddy

I have an Autoenginuity with some advanced software and I really cant complain about it as it does give alot of info but you cant test with it on most cars so its just data.

they recently came out with BMW. I may get that but going to see how the Determinator does on BMW as I think it does trans also.

Well finally got my determinator with 2.0 and only had 1 chance to use it wich was on a 95 Nisson and had no probs whats so ever, it booted and connected to the car very fast, has a nice screen and seems very user friendly, also looks easy to update. I actualy made out real well as Mac is now running the same promo deal but they are throwing in a 4 channel lab scope if you buy there Mentor. (cant be a very good scope )

So I showed the Matco dealer the flyer and he called I guess his district manager and they gave me a 2 channel OTC with the info tech wich would have cost me additional $500.00. not to bad.
