Fuel tank install in 2000 Celica GTS

Writing in for my son, who is just a shade tree mechanic needing a little advice. I tried to help him, today replace a leaking fuel tank on his Celica (2000 GTS). The old tank came out, without breaking bolts on the two, tank-straps. We got a pretty good, used tank from a reputable used parts yard, here in town. The tank fit back in just fine, but he cannot seem to get the two, strap bolts to thread backing into the body. The gap between the bolt and the body is so great, that you cannot pick-up any threads to get it started.

 

We even tried some slightly longer bolts, but, still could not catch some threads to get it started. We have tried supporting the gas tank on a floor jack and a piece of wood, without any luck. We do not have a hoist, but, are just using ramps, which make matters even more difficult.

 

I was wondering if, maybe, he should loosen the second bolt on each tank strap. This is the bolt on the forward end (toward front end of car)  of the tank strap. He only loosened the bolt closest to the rear end of the car and folded tank strap down, to remove tank. 

 

With the back seat removed, looking down into the tank opening where the fuel pump is installed, the tank seems to be well-centered in the opening and there are no hoses or wires pinched by the tank.

 

It was getting to the point of some tools almost being launched about the driveway; and, he gave-up, for today.

 

How about trying to loosen the bolt on the other end of the tank strap (toward the front of car) and getting some more play, maybe? Really afraid of breaking these. I have Kroil which we use for penetrating-oil.

Is it possible you got the wrong capacity fuel tank? Or the wrong year? Years ago, the gas tank rotted out on my 1978 Chevy Impala. They listed 2 different fuel tanks. A 19 gallon one, and a 21 gallon one. My vehicle came with the 19 gallon tank, but the parts store sent me a 21 gallon tank by mistake.

 

After I got it all in, that's when I found the error. The straps would not reach. However, I then let my creativity flow. I noticed the threads on the bolts were the exact same size as Escort cylinder head bolts. Which are about 8-10 inches long. So that is what I used. Problem solved.

 

You could try the same thing with a length / section of threaded rod. Then cut off the excess.


No longer working at dealerships. Government employee. Now i get paid to fix Fords.

We used to have the same problem on Crown Victoria fuel tanks (I should know, I converted our whole fleet of cruisers over to fuel cells) The first couple of tanks drove me batty. Mainly because Ford makes a special stud & nut that snaps off when it bottoms in the body mount. This makes the prospect of using the studs over an impossibility. One thing you have to realize is the fact that most car manufacturers bolt the fuel tanks into the frame with the frame upside down on the assembly line. Also most of he tanks have a tendency to swell over time, and when you release the straps, they relax, and you literally have no chance of re-installing the original bolts (they're always too short) In a situation like you describe on a Toyota, I would find out the metric thread size of the bolts. Armed with this information, I would purchase a couple of feet of metric "all thread" and some matching nuts. Cut a piece of all thread about 2" longer than the bolts, and screw it into the body, through the strap. Then, run the nut down on top of the strap to make the strap fit snugly against the tank (don't crush it). Once both bolts have been replaced with the all thread, cut off the extra material sticking out of the nuts, and apply some thread locker to keep them from getting loose. I don't usually work on Toyotas, but if I had to, there would be a devastating fire in my driveway.

those crown vics and town car fuel tanks used to piss me off till i finally figured out how to go about doing it. damn fords

The few times that I have run into that problem I just cut the straps and weld a section into them. Takes about 5 minutes. And before anyone one comments of course I make sure there isn't any gas near. But! there are time that you would like to.

You probably just need to walk it into place. I believe those tanks only come in one flavor. It has to go in just right or you won't be able to start the bolts.
