I had a hard time getting a crank pulley off today on an early 2000 sonata. I used some jaw pullers to yank it off, and much to my chagrin the damn timing gear came right off with it. Pulled right off the belt and everything.

Did I do something wrong here? I'm regretting maybe not trying to tapping around the pulley 1st with a mini sledge or something 1st before going at it with the puller.

Thoughts?

That's where you screwed up Seagull. You should have pulled the car off of the pulley.....not the other way around.

doesn't the crank cog gear bolt to the pulley? maybe you forgot to unbolt it. maybe it was just siezed together after 15 years.

My thoughts would be that a 15 year old Hyundai needs a new owner. Or else a car crusher. If you were in there for a timing belt / water pump replacement, the labor alone have to exceed the value of the car, let alone the parts.

Added together, would have made a nice down payment on a new one.
